Under-the-glaze blue and while small dish. Design shows five Chinese children playing under pine trees. This plate is not more than eighty years old. The blue is pale but clear, the drawing most carefully done.

After 1868 the kilns were operated as a business, still producing a beautiful fine porcelain decorated in under-the-glaze blue. It was about this time that the much talked of (abroad, not in Japan) design of Chinese children playing under pine-trees was produced, but no Japanese seems to know that the quality of the porcelain was indicated by the number of children pictured, and the design is not popular in Japan.

Hirado potters produced a great many small ornamental objects such as birds, branches of flowering shrubs and pieces decorated with designs pierced, carved or moulded in high relief either in all white, blue and white or in a peculiar slate-purple blue enamel glaze.
